DEVOTION TO IMPECCABLE RAW MATERIALS

WE DEDICATE TO OUR VINEYARDS MANIACAL CAREFULNESS AND ATTENTION. IT IS FROM THE RAW MATERIALS, THE GRAPES, THAT WE OBTAIN THE VERY GREAT QUALITY OF OUR WINES.

A UNIQUE PATRIMONY

We carry out most of the operations in the vineyards by hand.
Only can the expert eye and the skilled hand achieve the highest quality of the grapes.

No vine is replaced until it dies: an important choice considering that the older the vine, the less it produces, but decisive for the quality of the grapes.

Part of the nowadays’ vines have been replanted by Luigi’s father, Lorenzo, in the 1940s. They are for us a unique patrimony. It is the ancient vines, with their lower yields and their deeper roots, which produce extraordinary grapes. As a result the berries are much smaller, more concentrated and fully ripe.

We carry out a minimum of two green harvests per year in each vineyard to further reduce the yields. The green harvest implies a long and scrupulous work during the high summer season. In about 40 days we examine attentively all the bunches, one by one, and we eliminate those in excess. In this way the remaining grapes reach a phenolic ripening and a concentration otherwise unattainable.

More than 75% of our vineyards are planted to Nebbiolo, while Dolcetto and Barbera cover about 5 hectares.

RESPECT FOR THE LAND

We have always limited phytosanitary treatments as much as possible, using exclusively natural products like copper and sulfur only when strictly necessary.

We do not use chemical pesticides, but only natural pheromones which prevent the mating of harmful insects.

We do not use chemical herbicides.
We have been adopting the practice of the native cover crop for over 50 years, which allows us, as well as the exclusion of the use of chemical products, to have a natural competition between the vines and the spontaneous grass. The cover crop also promotes the reduction of the erosion, a very frequent and dangerous phenomenon, especially in our steep hills, thus avoiding subsidences caused by the runoff action of the rainwater.
Furthermore the cover crop permits the maintenance of a healthy vitality of the ecosystem.
Grass is periodically mowed and kept on site to serve as natural fertilizer, bringing organic matter to the soil and consequently ameliorating the bacterial microflora of the subsoil.
The bottom of the row is instead mowed by hand.

We do not use chemical fertilizers.
We solely use organic fertilizers with natural organic bovine manure, which is distributed by hand only in the poorest areas of each vineyard.

Our vineyards are located in three villages: Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba and Montelupo Albese, for a total surface of about 16 hectares.
